If you’re like most parents buying a home in Knoxville, you know that moving is going to be challenging. You’ll have to juggle more responsibilities than usual – but let us be the first to tell you you’ve got this. Check out these five tips for moving with a baby. You’ll be glad you did.
5 Can’t-Miss Tips for Moving With a Baby
Your move doesn’t need any added stress – and these five tips can help ensure that the whole thing goes smoothly:
- Get help. Seriously.
- Baby-proof before you show up on moving day.
- Pack baby items last.
- Unpack baby items first.
- Put plenty of miles on your pack ‘n play.
Here’s a closer look at each.
Moving With a Baby – Tip #1: Get help. Seriously.
If you can afford to hire a sitter for moving day, do – or have grandma, big brother or your neighbor help out, at least for a few hours. Having someone to play with your little one frees you for other tasks that need your attention, and it can dramatically shorten the time it takes for you to get from Point A to Point B.
Moving With a Baby – Tip #2: Baby-proof before you show up on moving day.
Swing by your new home before you actually move in to make sure everything is baby-proofed. You may also want to clean up areas you plan to spend time with your little one. (Even better, you may be able to get your Knoxville REALTOR® to negotiate a deal with sellers that requires them to hire a cleaning professional after they move out.)
Check out these baby-proofing tasks you might want to perform before the big day:
- Add child-resistant locks to drawers and cabinets
- Put up safety gates
- Secure windows with window guards
- Wrap up cords on window blinds
- Cover electrical outlets with plug-in covers
Moving With a Baby – Tip #3: Pack baby items last.
Set aside a box for essentials when you’re packing baby items – you don’t want to have to hunt for pacifiers, wipes and diapers, favorite toys or other necessities. Think about including:
- Extra clothing and pajamas
- Extra blankets
- Food and snacks if your baby is old enough for them
- Sippy cups or bottles
- Bath items
- Empty plastic bags for used diapers and wipes, or for dirty clothes
- A thermometer and small first-aid kit
Moving With a Baby – Tip #4: Unpack baby items first.
When all your boxes have arrived in your new home, make it a point to get nursery items unpacked first. Having a familiar, comfortable space is good for your little one (and you), and it helps them ease into their new surroundings.
Moving With a Baby – Tip #5: Put plenty of miles on your pack ‘n play.
Hand-carry your pack ‘n play on moving day. Set it up immediately when you get to your new home. You don’t have to put your little one in it right away – but it’s there if you need it (and from experience, we can tell you that you will).
